Lesmurdie Woods Set for Makeover

Over the last 18 months the Elgin North Area and Elgin Youth Forums have involved the local community of Lesmurdie to investigate how the needs identified in the Elgin North Community Action Plan, created in October 2005 could be satisfied.  These were:

Improved Community Safety
Activities for Children
Somewhere for Young People to Go
Adult Learning Opportunities

Through further discussions with local residents in the Lesmurdie area it was identified that many of these needs could be resolved by regenerating the Lesmurdie Woods.  This would also improve the local environment and provide a much needed facility for the whole community.  In November 2005, the idea of regenerating the Lesmurdie Woods was awarded £15,000 from the Quality of Life fund, administered by the Moray Council.  This money is specifically to provide an adventure play area for 11-16 year olds.

The suggestions to date to regenerate the woods have included an Adventure BMX track, picnic area and seating, and using the area as a healthy living and education resource to promote physical activity and conversation.  A Lesmurdie Woods Action Group is now established to take these ideas forward.

Along with the residents, support, in way of staff resource, has been given by the YMCA, Community Learning and Development Adult and Youth Teams, Active Schools and the Forestry Commission.
